M.C. Mary Kom, the six-time world boxing champion and Olympic bronze medalist, has refuted rumors suggesting her retirement from the amateur circuit. Despite surpassing the age limit for amateur competition, the 41-year-old asserted that she has not officially declared retirement and clarified that she has been misquoted in media reports.

Addressing the speculations, Mary Kom stated, “I have not yet announced my retirement. Whenever I decide to make such an announcement, I will personally address the media. I’m still working hard to stay in shape, and I’ll inform everyone when I make my retirement official.”

In response to earlier reports citing her retirement due to the age limit for amateur boxers, Mary Kom explained that during an event in Dibrugarh, Assam, on January 24, 2024, she expressed her ongoing desire to succeed in sports. She highlighted the age restriction preventing her from Olympic competition but emphasized her continued commitment to the sport.

Since her pre-quarterfinal loss at the Tokyo Olympics, Mary Kom has not been seen in action, sparking speculation about her future. Despite being one of the most decorated Indian athletes with six Asian titles and six world gold medals, she clarified that she has not entered a field without age restrictions.

As a Rajya Sabha MP, mother of four, and Khel Ratna recipient, Mary Kom has received numerous accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan in 2020, the second-highest civilian honor in India.

Contrary to previous reports, Mary Kom has not officially retired and remains determined to compete at the highest level, though age restrictions may limit her options. Her legacy in boxing includes being the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Tournament, and she continues to inspire with her dedication to the sport.
