In a recent statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced a significant overhaul of the gallantry and service medals, consolidating sixteen awards into four. This development was unveiled on the eve of the 75th Republic Day, honoring 1132 individuals from various agencies, including the police, fire department, home guards, civil defense, and corrections service, for their exceptional gallantry.

The newly introduced medals are the President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG), the Medal for Gallantry (GM), the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PMG), and the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM). This consolidation streamlines the recognition process and reflects the government’s efforts to modernize the award system.

The division looks like this:

Breaking down the awards, 227 gallantry medals were announced under two categories, with 275 Medals for Gallantry and two President’s Medals for Gallantry. Notably, 133 individuals are being recognized for bravery in Jammu and Kashmir, 119 for actions in areas affected by Left Wing Extremism (LWE), and 25 for actions in other regions. The two PMGs specifically honor Border Security Force (BSF) personnel.

Moving on to the Medal for Meritorious Service/Medal for Distinguished Service, 102 individuals will be awarded in the former category and 753 in the latter. 75th Republic Day The distribution includes four medals each for civil defense and foreservice, with an additional 94 medals awarded to the police.

Further details reveal that out of the 753 medals for Distinguished Service, 667 pertain to law enforcement, 32 to the fire department, and 27 each to civil defense and corrections. This comprehensive restructuring reflects the government’s commitment to adapting and refining the gallantry and service medals system in recent years.

In a notable instance, two PMGs were awarded to Border Security Force personnel from the 15th Congo contingent for their outstanding contribution to the peacekeeping mission as part of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). This recognition underlines the exceptional efforts of these individuals in a challenging international context.

Of the 277 gallantry medals, specific acknowledgments include 275 awarded to J&K Police officers, with significant numbers also going to officers from Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Delhi, CRPF, and SSB, among others.

Notably, three Delhi Police Special Cell Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) will receive the President’s Medal, 75th Republic Day with ACPs Lalit Mohan Negi and Hriday Bhushan being honored for their pivotal roles in dismantling several important terrorist modules.

This restructuring not only simplifies the award system but also emphasizes the diverse and commendable contributions of individuals across various agencies in safeguarding the nation and promoting peacekeeping efforts globally.
