Haryana Police Threatens Farmers: 'We'll Cancel Your Passport And Visa

The Haryana Police has declared its intention to invalidate passport and visa of individuals involved in violence during the ongoing agitation. On Thursday, farmers are expected to decide whether to continue their march towards Delhi.

Following the halt of the protesting farmers’ march to the national capital on February 13, they established camps at Khanauri and Shambhu points on the Punjab-Haryana border. On February 29, they pledged to discuss the further course of the march, pressing the central government for concessions such as a farm loan waiver and a legal guarantee for the minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

The Punjab Police filed a murder case on February 21 against an unidentified person in connection with the death of Shubhkaran Singh (22) from Bathinda. Clashes with protesting farmers at Khanauri also left twelve security personnel injured.

In tribute to Shubhkaran Singh, Passport and Visa several NGOs in Amritsar held a candlelight vigil. The impasse between the farmers and the Punjab government ended with the filing of the FIR, enabling the post-mortem of Shubhkaran Singh’s body. Farmer leaders insisted on a formal complaint before proceeding with the post-mortem.

Shubhkaran Singh’s remains are currently at the Rajindra Hospital mortuary in Patiala, with cremation expected today. The murder case, filed under sections 302 (murder) and 114 (abettor visible when the offense is committed), allows for the body’s post-mortem, according to farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher. Before cremation, Shubhkaran Singh’s body will be brought to Khanauri.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann awarded Shubhkaran Singh’s sister a government job and a compensation of Rs 1 crore. The Haryana Police informed that they have identified farmers involved in violent acts during the protest and will request the cancellation of their passports and visas through relevant embassies and government channels.

“We have identified those involved in violent acts against farmers in Haryana traveling from Punjab. With the help of drones and CCTV footage, we have pinpointed them. We will request the embassy and ministry to revoke their passports and visas. Passport and Visa The passport office will receive their name, address, and photos. We are currently working on canceling their passports,” stated DSP Ambala Joginder Sharma.

In addition to seeking the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, pensions for farmers and farm laborers, and an end to power tariff increases, the farmers’ demands include the resumption of the Land Acquisition Act of 2013, compensation for families of farmers who lost their lives during the protests in 2020-21, and justice for the 2021 violence in Lakhimpur Kheri.
