In the Ranchi residence courtyard, Hemant Soren pedaled around on a bicycle back in 2019. Following the assembly polls, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) emerged as the single largest party. Currently under scrutiny from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for alleged illegal mining contracts,
Hemant Soren finds himself in a familiar cycle. As the de facto leader of JMM and the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, he has managed to sidestep ten ED summonses, yet the specter of additional cases looms.
Amidst the legal challenges, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has devised a contingency plan – Plan B. With Hemant Soren potentially facing arrest, discussions surrounding this alternative strategy are gaining momentum.

JHARKHAND MUKTI MORCHA’S PLAN B
Enter Plan B: Kalpana Soren, the wife of Hemant Soren. Though not an MLA, her ascension to power seems well orchestrated. There is widespread belief that Kalpana Soren will seamlessly transition into the role of the next Chief Minister. A senior journalist in Ranchi, bound by contractual obligations preventing the disclosure of identity, affirms that she faces little opposition within the party and will be embraced by its members.
Reports indicate that to facilitate Plan B, JMM MLA Sarfaraz Ahmed has resigned from the Assembly. Ahmed, representing the Gandey constituency and having served three terms, had switched to JMM just before the 2019 polls. Speculations arose that Hemant Soren’s wife would succeed him as the Chief Minister following Ahmed’s resignation, a move duly accepted.
“The Soren family’s new year appears to be painful,” remarked BJP Lok Sabha MP Nishikant Dubey.
Kalpana Soren: Who is she?
Hailing from President Draupadi Murmu’s home district, Mayurbhanj district in Odisha, Kalpana is a 43-year-old graduate of the engineering program with an MBA. Described as confident and intelligent, she enjoys popularity within the JMM community. The undisclosed journalist asserts that there should be minimal resistance to her leadership from both internal and external factions.
Hemant’s younger brother, Basant Soren, an MLA, becomes a focal point of comparison. Portrayed as having a thuggish demeanor and lacking political acumen, he is purportedly unpopular within the party. It is claimed that Kalpana, aside from her potential political role, owns a school and is engaged in organic farming. The Congress, with 17 seats and being a JMM ally, is deemed unfit to claim the CM’s chair due to internal issues. Another ally, the RJD, holds only one seat.

Insiders suggest that Kalpana has been advising Hemant on various matters. Evading the Delhi Police, she returned to Ranchi and was present during Hemant’s meeting with MLAs on Tuesday morning.
