Why was Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren arrested?

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s recent arrival in Ranchi has been marked by a series of events involving the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ED has claimed that Soren was “untraceable” for over 30 hours, leading to speculations about his impending arrest in connection with a land fraud case.

Sources indicate that the ED has accumulated substantial evidence linking Soren to three money laundering cases related to coal mining, illegal mining, and land issues in Jharkhand. The agency asserts that there is enough evidence to warrant Soren’s arrest based on the information gathered during their investigations.

Apart from the land case, the ED alleges connections between Soren and illicit mining operations in Jharkhand. Statements made under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) reportedly implicate individuals close to Soren, including high-level state officials.

The ED claims to possess documentary evidence linking Soren to properties allegedly purchased with proceeds from criminal activities. On Monday, an ED team went to Soren’s official residence in Delhi to question him regarding a money laundering case linked to the land issue. However, Soren was reportedly not at home, leading to a declaration by the ED that he was “missing.”

The ED team initiated a search for Soren at 7 am, considering him unreachable at that moment. According to the ED, new information about the land case prompted the searches at his Delhi residence. Despite receiving ten summons, Soren had ignored nine of them. He had agreed to appear before the ED on January 31 for questioning at his official Ranchi residence.

Soren’s first statement in the case was recorded on January 20 during an almost seven-hour investigation by the ED team at his Ranchi residence. While he had given consent to be questioned on January 31, sources close to the Chief Minister’s Office suggest that Soren is exploring legal options and may file a court case seeking protection from coercive measures.

The ED conducted searches at Soren’s Delhi home, following proper protocol, and found two BMWs, incriminating documents, and Rs 36 lakh in cash. This development adds another layer to the ongoing investigation, raising questions about the Chief Minister’s alleged involvement in various financial improprieties.
