Shivani Singh’s remarkable journey from facing financial crises in her family to becoming one of the pioneering women pilots of India’s semi-high-speed train, Namo Bharat, is a testament to her resilience and determination.

Having lost her father at the tender age of 12, Shivani navigated through economic hardships by turning her passion for sewing into a valuable resource, not only supporting her education but also paving the way for her to secure a position as a pilot on the groundbreaking Namo Bharat trains for the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).

Who is Shivani Singh 

At the age of 22, Shivani Singh stands out as one of the pilots driving India’s first semi-high-speed train, Namo Bharat. Her journey from adversity to accomplishment began when her father’s demise left her family of six grappling with difficult circumstances.

In the face of economic challenges, Shivani utilized her sewing skills to contribute to her family’s income and fund her education. The story of her journey emphasizes not only personal success but also sheds light on the advancements in India’s transportation sector, particularly the transformative impact of the RRTS initiative.

Early life of Shivani Singh

During the challenging times after her father’s passing, Shivani turned to stitching as a means to support her education. Her proficiency in sewing allowed her to finance a diploma course in electrical engineering at the Bhagwati Institute of Technology and Science in Dasna. Reflecting on her journey, Shivani shared, “I had started stitching out of boredom. Eventually, it helped me contribute to my family’s income. My elder brother supported me in my education, but now it is time when I need to make my decision on my responsibility. I enrolled for the 2-year diploma course in electrical engineering and completed it with the money I had saved,” as reported by The Times of India.

Shivani Singh as pilot of Namo Bharat Trains 

The turning point in Shivani’s life came when a government agency visited her college seeking candidates to operate trains on the RRTS between Delhi and Meerut. The RRTS corridor’s first section was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi in 2023, with the full unveiling scheduled for 2025. Shivani seized the opportunity and embarked on a journey to become one of the pilots for the Namo Bharat trains, piloting the priority segment after months of rigorous training.

Recalling the memorable day of the RRTS corridor’s inauguration, Shivani shared, “We were wearing our uniforms – blue suits and a red cap – which made us feel like airline pilots. It still gives me goosebumps… The sight of the PM waving the flag and a crowd cheering.”

Conclusion 

In her role as a pilot, Shivani underwent extensive training under the National Capital Region Transport Corporation. Alongside a batch of other women pilots, she learned the intricacies of operating modern trains during a three-month venture to the Lucknow Metro. The subsequent nine months were dedicated to practical and theoretical training at the Duhai depot, where they became adept at operating high-speed rail trains. The training encompassed simulator exercises followed by hands-on experience with real trains.
