Yogi Government Expands Cabinet with the Induction of Four New Ministers

Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, is set to expand his cabinet by appointing at least four new ministers today, just days before the announcement of the next Lok Sabha elections.

Sources reveal that OP Rajbhar, the chief of Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, Anil Kumar from the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), and Sunil Sharma and Dara Singh Chauhan from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are among those expected to be inducted.

Sunil Sharma, who secured the Sahibabad seat in Ghaziabad with a remarkable margin in the 2017 and 2022 UP elections, is anticipated to rejoin the Yogi Adityanath Cabinet. Rajbhar, who left the ruling BJP five years ago, is also expected to make a comeback. Anil Kumar, the RLD leader from West Uttar Pradesh, recently aligned with the NDA after being a part of the INDIA bloc.

Tuesday morning saw Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath presiding over a cabinet meeting, where the names of the new ministers were reportedly finalized by the BJP’s central leadership during a meeting in the nation’s capital last week. There are indications that UP Governor Anandiben Patel will administer the oath of office to the new ministers by Tuesday night.

The speculation about cabinet expansion intensified after Dara Singh Chauhan, a former Samajwadi Party legislator who contested on a BJP ticket in a by-election, resigned from the party. Despite losing the election, Chauhan later joined the UP government council of ministers as an MLC from the BJP quota.

OP Rajbhar, who severed ties with the Samajwadi Party in July 2023 to join the NDA led by the BJP, had declared last week that he wouldn’t celebrate Holi if not appointed to the cabinet. The UP council of ministries currently has 52 members, and it is expected that at least eight more individuals could join based on its strength.

In Yogi Adityanath’s initial cabinet, Rajbhar served as the Minister of Welfare for the backward classes but parted ways with the BJP during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Despite running with the Samajwadi Party in the UP 2022 assembly election, he returned to the NDA in the preceding year.

The Rajbhar community, constituting over 20% of the population in eastern Yogi Uttar Pradesh, is a crucial support base for the SBSP, claiming influence over about 28 Lok Sabha seats. Meanwhile, Chauhan, a significant figure for the Nonia sub-caste of OBCs, is known for his influence in Azamgarh, Ghosi, and Ghazipur—three seats the BJP lost in 2019.
