Former Judges Turned Politicians: A Glimpse into the Intersection of Law and Politics

Recently retired Judge Former Abhijit Gangopadhya of the Calcutta High Court has attracted attention for announcing his intention to join the BJP, raising concerns about the potential impact of post-retirement political affiliations on decisions made prior to stepping down. This is not an isolated case, as several well-known judges have ventured into politics in the past.

KS Hegde

One such example is KS Hegde, who began his legal career in 1933, served as a public prosecutor and government leader until 1951, and later joined the Congress Party. Hegde was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1952, served as a judge of the Mysore High Court, and later became a member of the Sixth Lok Sabha on the Janata Party ticket in 1977.

 Islam Baharul

Former Supreme Court judge Baharul Islam also made a dramatic career shift six weeks before his planned retirement. In 1983, he entered politics as a Congress candidate from Barpeta, Assam, in the Lok Sabha election. Islam had previously been elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1962 and 1968.

Justice Ranganath Misra, appointed as a Permanent Judge of the Orissa High Court in 1969, later became the acting Chief Justice in 1980.

Former Chief Justice of India Koka Subba Rao accepted an invitation from the Swatantra Party in 1967 to run as the United Opposition’s nominee for the Indian presidential election.
