Parole for Gurmeet Ram Rahim Requires Authorization

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has conveyed to the Haryana government that Gurmeet Ram Rahim, a convicted rapist and leader of Dera Sacha Sauda, cannot be released from prison without the government’s explicit consent. Despite serving a 20-year sentence in Rohtak’s Sunaria jail for sexually assaulting two followers, Gurmeet Ram Rahim has been granted parole on multiple occasions.

Recently, he was allowed a 50-day parole just two months after his previous release on a 21-day furlough.

The High Court emphasized that any further release must have the government’s approval. During his temporary release, Gurmeet Ram Rahim visited the Dera Sacha Sauda Ashram in Barnawa, Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh.

This pattern of parole includes a 40-day parole in January of the previous year, followed by a 30-day parole on July 30.

In October of the same year, he was granted another 40-day parole, and in June, a month-long parole. Additionally, on February 7, 2022, a three-week furlough was granted. It is notable that the Dera chief, along with four others, was convicted of planning the assassination of Dera manager Ranjit Singh in 2021.

Moreover, in 2019, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and three others were found guilty of the murder of a journalist sixteen years prior. Despite the convictions for heinous crimes, the leader of Dera Sacha Sauda continues to be released from prison multiple times, drawing criticism from various quarters.

Harjinder Singh Dhami, the president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, has strongly opposed the Haryana government’s decision, arguing that it fosters a culture of distrust within the Sikh community. He asserts that while the Dera chief receives temporary releases, the government neglects the calls for the release of Sikh prisoners, known as “Bandi Singhs.”
