The recent announcement aligns with ongoing speculations about the Congress party finalizing seat-sharing agreements with the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Derek O’Brien, the leader of TMC, reiterated on Friday that his party will independently contest the upcoming
West Bengal Lok Sabha elections. Despite rumors suggesting renewed discussions between Congress and TMC for an alliance, O’Brien maintained TMC’s stance of contesting all 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal, along with a few in Assam and one in Meghalaya.

Earlier, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, had declared TMC’s intention to vie for all 42 seats in Bengal, as well as some seats in Assam and the Meghalaya Tura Lok Sabha seat. O’Brien affirmed that this position remains unchanged. Although TMC initially declared its solo run in the local elections scheduled for April-May, the Congress later indicated that seat-sharing negotiations with TMC were back on track.
In Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party and Congress solidified their alliance, with the former contesting 63 seats and the latter 17 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats. The Congress has identified specific constituencies, including Raebareli, Amethi, Fatehpur Sikri, Saharanpur, Prayagraj, Maharajganj, Varanasi, Amroha, Jhansi, Bulandshahar, Ghaziabad, Mathura, Sitapur, Barabanki, Kanpur, Bansgaon, and Deoria.
