Prime Minister Modi to Inaugurate Hindu Temple in Abu Dhabi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-day visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Tuesday, with a significant agenda that includes inaugurating the first-ever Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi. The visit underscores the robust relationship between India and the UAE, as this marks Modi’s seventh visit to the country since 2015 and the third in the last eight months.

During the trip, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to address the Indian diaspora in Abu Dhabi on the first day and engage in bilateral meetings with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of the UAE, to explore opportunities for strengthening strategic partnerships. Additionally, Modi will meet with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the UAE’s Prime Minister, Vice President, and Minister of Defense.

One of the highlights of the visit is the inauguration of the BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi, the first traditional Hindu stone temple in the Middle East. The temple symbolizes the UAE’s commitment to diversity and tolerance, reflecting the vision of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, who proposed the idea during his 1997 visit to the UAE.

The UAE government’s decision in August 2015 to allocate land for the temple was a significant gesture of goodwill. The memorandum of understanding for the temple project was signed during Prime Minister Modi’s visit, emphasizing the belief that the temple would serve as a sacred space promoting unity among nations, civilizations, and faiths.

The BAPS Hindu Mandir, designed by RSP Architects, Planners & Engineers Private Limited, and Capital Engineering Consultants, adheres to the ancient Hindu scriptures of Shilpa Shastras. With dimensions of 32.92 meters in height, 79.86 meters in length, and 54.86 meters in width, the temple is an architectural marvel. Expected to accommodate 10,000 people, it is poised to become the largest Hindu temple in West Asia.

Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the World Government Summit in Dubai in 2024 as a guest of honor further emphasizes the strong ties between India and the UAE. As he concludes his UAE visit, he is set to travel to Qatar, marking another chapter in diplomatic engagements and cooperation in the region.
