Joining BJP: Ashok Chavan will file his nomination to Rajya Sabha tomorrow.

On Tuesday, former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan formally joined the BJP, a day after resigning from the Congress. The event took place at the Mumbai BJP office, where Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed him. Chavan expressed his intention to work with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on infrastructure development, stating that he was no longer seeking prominent positions after having held several in the past.

Having spent 38 years in politics, Ashok Chavan announced a new chapter in his life. Speculation arose that the BJP might nominate him for the Rajya Sabha, possibly prompting his swift move to the party before the nomination deadline.

Chavan’s departure ahead of the Lok Sabha election poses a significant setback for the Congress, already grappling with the loss of key figures like Baba Siddique and Milind Deora to rival parties. Siddique joined the NCP led by Ajit Pawar, while Deora joined the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde.

In response to Chavan’s resignation, prominent Muslim leader Baba Siddique called it a wake-up call for the Congress, urging the party to address internal issues. Siddique recounted a phone conversation with Chavan, expressing optimism about future collaborations. He emphasized that more departures could follow if individuals feel stifled within the party.

After meeting with speaker Rahul Narwekar, Chavan, who represented the Bhokar assembly segment in Nanded, announced his resignation from the assembly on February 12, 2024. This move makes him the third notable Congress leader to leave the party in the state, following Milind Deora and Baba Siddique.

Following Ashok Chavan announcement, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed that several well-known figures from other political parties expressed a desire to join the BJP, indicating a shift in political alignments in the region.
