Indian Navy veterans, who had previously faced a death sentence in Qatar, were recently released, thanks to the close ties between PM Modi and the Emir of Qatar, along with the diplomatic efforts led by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Acting on PM Modi’s recommendation, NSA Doval spearheaded the delicate negotiations for the demobilization of the ex-Navy personnel, while External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar handled diplomatic aspects.

In an unexpected turn of events in October, a Qatari court sentenced the veterans to death, with charges related to spying, although the specifics were not disclosed by the Qatari government. The sentence was later reduced in December, but this information was only made public recently.
During the COP28 conference in Dubai, PM Modi discussed bilateral relations with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar. The significance of this timeframe was highlighted by Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesperson for the department of external affairs, who mentioned a 60-day window for the issue to be reviewed in the Supreme Court of Cassation in Qatar.
The legal team representing the Ministry of External Affairs now possesses a private court order detailing the discussions between death sentences and imprisonment terms. The court order became public after the court of appeal’s decision on December 28, revealing the replacement of the death penalty with prison terms.
With this new information, it is confirmed that each Navy veteran received varying prison terms, and the death penalty has been completely removed, as mentioned by Jaiswal earlier. The MEA spokesperson also highlighted the positive outcome of the meeting between Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad and Prime Minister Modi, emphasizing their fruitful discussion on the overall bilateral relationship between the two countries.
Upon their return to New Delhi, seven out of the eight Indian Navy officers expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi, acknowledging his efforts in raising their case with Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani. They attributed their release to Modi’s persistent diplomatic endeavors.
