Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced plans for an interfaith ‘Sarba Dharma’ rally on January 22, coinciding with the day of the Ram Temple’s ‘Pran Pratishtha’ in Ayodhya. Banerjee, addressing a press conference, revealed her intention to lead the rally, starting from Kalighat Hazra to Park Circus, and perform puja at the Kalighat temple. Emphasizing inclusivity, she invited people from all religions to participate.

The ‘Sarba Dharma’ rally is envisioned to cover various religious sites, including mosques, churches, gurdwaras, and temples. Banerjee pledged to hold a meeting at Park Circus Maidan, stressing the theme of “All religions are equal.” When questioned about any opposition to the Ram Temple consecration, she responded negatively, stating that she is organizing a counter-event and avoiding confrontation.

Banerjee criticized the BJP, alleging that the Ram Temple consecration was used as an “election gimmick” ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The consecration ceremony, expected to host up to 7,000 attendees with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is not expected to be attended by Banerjee or her party representatives.

Reports suggest that Banerjee aims to steer clear of controversy while conveying a message to minorities, a crucial voting bloc in Bengal. Since assuming office, she has emphasized the inclusive nature of her politics, countering divisive tactics often employed for political gains.

A Trinamool MP expressed anticipation for the rally, viewing it as an opportunity to counteract what he called the “saffron-propaganda juggernaut.” He noted that the event would mark the beginning of their general campaign, setting the stage for potential victories in future elections.
