In less than a month, Uttar Pradesh is set to welcome five new airports, bringing the total count to 19 in the state, as announced by Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. The expansion of aviation infrastructure in the riverside town of Ayodhya marked a significant milestone with the launch of the first tri-weekly flight between Ahmedabad and Ayodhya.

The inaugural flight, virtually flagged off by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Minister Scindia, and other dignitaries, saw high excitement. CM Adityanath personally handed over the boarding pass for the historic flight and spoke about the anticipation of around 100 chartered aircraft carrying guests for the upcoming “pran-pratishtha” ceremony on January 22 at the Ayodhya airport. He emphasized that the numerous landings would help evaluate the potential of the newly constructed airport.

Scindia highlighted the remarkable growth of Uttar Pradesh’s aviation industry, noting that in 2014, the state had only six airports, and now it boasts ten, including the newly inaugurated Ayodhya airport. The state is set to open one airport each in Azamgarh, Aligarh, Moradabad, Shravasti, and Chitrakoot in the coming month, with Jewar also expected to have an operational international airport by the end of the year.

The grand opening of the Ayodhya airport was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 30. IndiGo and Air India Express initiated the first flight between Ayodhya and Delhi on the same day, marking a historic moment. Scindia expressed the significance of the day,new airports stating that it marked the creation of a new history for the holy city of Ayodhya as the new year began.

In terms of security measures, the Home Department issued directives on December 20 for the deployment of the Uttar Pradesh Special Security Force (UPSSF) at these airports. The Principal Secretary of the Home Department, Sanjay Prasad, outlined the roles and responsibilities of the local police and UPSSF, ensuring security under the guidance of the Director General of Police (DGP). The UPSSF officially commenced its operations on September 1, 2022, with thirty employees deployed to Lok Bhawan in Lucknow.
