The veteran actor-turned-politician, Captain Vijayakanth, has left us at the age of 71. Renowned for his impactful roles as a police officer in films, he was admitted to the hospital for a routine check-up, only to be diagnosed with pneumonia and test positive for COVID-19.

Celebrities lament his demise.

Despite being placed on a ventilator due to respiratory difficulties, he succumbed to the illness on Thursday. His prolonged illness was evident, prompting Tamil Nadu to cancel morning shows in theaters as a mark of respect. The news of his demise has elicited grief from both celebrities and fans, with an outpouring of condolences on social media.

Kamal Haasan, in a heartfelt message written in Tamil, lauded Captain Vijayakanth for his humane actions, innovative political ideas in Tamil Nadu, and unwavering courage. He described him as a revolutionary artist who left an indelible mark on both politics and cinema.

Trisha expressed her condolences, emphasizing the generosity of Vijayakanth, while Jr. NTR hailed him as a powerhouse and a political and cinematic titan. Vikram conveyed his sorrow, stating that Captain would be missed, and Sonu Sood acknowledged Vijayakanth’s pivotal role in his career, recounting how he helped him secure his first film.

An abundant heritage

Vijayakanth, born as Narayan Vijayaraj Alagarswami in 1952 in Madurai, stood out as one of the rare actors dedicated entirely to Tamil cinema. His films were often dubbed in Telugu and Hindi, earning him the moniker “Puratchi Kalaignar” or revolutionary artist.

Most recognized for his roles as a noble police officer, he earned the title “Captain” after the success of the 1991 film “Captain Prabhakaran.” This movie, a historic achievement in Tamil cinema, marked his 100th film and solidified his position in the industry.
