Following a gathering of 54 BJP MLAs at the party’s state headquarters in Raipur, Sai was elected as the leader, marking a historic moment as he is set to become the first tribal chief minister of the state.
Sai, succeeding Congressman Bhupesh Baghel, expressed his commitment to implementing Prime Minister Modi’s pre-election promises as the new chief minister. He outlined his immediate priorities, with the primary focus on approving 18 lakh houses for beneficiaries of the housing scheme.
The decision was made at the party headquarters, Kushabhau Thakre Parisar, in Raipur, in the presence of key party figures, including Union ministers Arjun Munda and Sarbananda Sonowal, party general secretary Dushyant Kumar Gautam, and others. The selection of Sai, a leader with tribal roots, holds significance not just for the state but also for the upcoming 2024 elections, as it sends a clear message to tribal communities. The BJP’s success in the Bastar region, where Sai secured victory in all 14 segments, underscores the trust tribal people have in Prime Minister Modi.
Vishnu Deo Sai brings with him a wealth of experience, having served as a minister of state in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet during the 16th Lok Sabha. After the Congress Party assumed power in Chhattisgarh in 2018, Sai was appointed as the state president of the BJP, a position he held until 2022. Additionally, he is a member of the BJP’s national working committee.
The recent assembly elections saw the BJP secure 54 out of 90 seats, a significant turnaround from the Congress’s previous tally of 68 seats in 2018. The Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP) secured one seat. Vishnu Deo Sai’s election as the legislative party leader reflects the BJP’s strong mandate and sets the stage for a new era of governance in Chhattisgarh.
