The BBC's new chairman, Dr Sameer Shah, is a media veteran.
Dr. Samir Shah, a seasoned media executive born in Aurangabad, India, and a resident of England since 1960, is poised to take on the role of Chairman at the BBC. With over 40 years of experience in journalism and TV production, Dr. Shah has a rich background, having previously led the BBC’s political and current affairs departments.
The appointment comes as the UK government’s choice to replace Richard Sharp, who resigned amid an investigation into his correspondence with former Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Dr. Shah, aged 71, was honored with a CBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 2019 for his significant contributions to television and heritage.

Before assuming the leadership of the public service broadcaster, Dr. Shah will undergo pre-appointment scrutiny by cross-party members of the House of Commission Media Culture, Media, and Sport Select Committee.
Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer expressed confidence in Dr. Shah, emphasizing his extensive experience and commitment to the BBC’s role as a national broadcaster. He pledged to leverage his accumulated knowledge, expertise, and experience to ensure the BBC continues to fulfill its unique duty of reaching a broad audience and maintaining its crucial role in British life amid an increasingly competitive market.

Recently, Dr. Shah was part of a government-appointed panel investigating disturbances in Leicester City, showcasing his continued commitment to addressing societal challenges. His appointment signals a new chapter for the BBC under his leadership, navigating the evolving media landscape with a focus on diversity, excellence, and public service.
