The Maratha quota bill will be introduced by Eknath Shinde.

Eknath Shinde Outside the state assembly, SP MLA Abu Azmi is advocating for reservations for Muslims, waving banners to support a five percent Muslim reservation in state government employment and educational institutions. This comes as the Maratha quota bill, introduced by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, aims to provide reservations to Marathas without impacting existing quotas.

SP MLA Rais Shaikh emphasizes the need for MuEknath Shindeslim communities to receive quota benefits, citing a previous government’s announcement granting five percent reservation to Muslims on the same day as the Maratha community. He applauds the justice for Marathas but urges fair treatment for Muslims as well.

Calling on Deputy CM Ajit Pawar to uphold his commitment to minorities, Shaikh highlights the disparity in treatment and requests a review of the notification. The Muslim community, constituting over 10% of the state’s population, has been previously granted reservations by the Congress-NCP government.

The economic and educational challenges faced by the Muslim community are supported by data from the Justice Rajinder Sachar Commission (2006) and the Justice Ranganath Mishra Committee (2004). The Dr. Mehmoodur Rehman Committee in 2009 recommended an 8% reservation for Muslims, addressing their workforce and educational needs.

Meanwhile, the Eknath Shinde government’s bill proposes a 10 percent quota for the Maratha community, pushing the reservation ceiling beyond 50%. A special assembly session has been called amid protests, with Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil expressing disappointment and considering the government’s decision a betrayal, driven by electoral considerations. Patil insists on addressing their initial demands and suggests the need for a comprehensive law.
