A Spiritual Extravaganza: Ratha Saptami at Arasavalli Temple

The Suryanarayana Arasavalli Temple in Arasavalli was adorned with exquisite decorations on Thursday to celebrate the annual Ratha Saptami. Anticipating a gathering of over 150,000 devotees seeking the blessings of Lord Suryanarayana Swamy, the temple is second only to the Konark Temple in Odisha, making it the largest sun god temple in the southern region.

Two years ago, during the Surya Jayanthi or Ratha Saptami celebration, thousands of worshippers flocked to the Arasavalli Sun Temple. Unfortunately, due to a lack of coordination among endowment, revenue, and police officials, chaos ensued.

A significant incident occurred at midnight on Monday when, in accordance with traditions, Saraswati was unable to attend the function. The celebrations commenced with Dwadasa Harati, Maha Nivedhana, and milk anointing by Arasavalli Temple priests and endowment officials. Deputy Chief Minister Dharamana Krishna Das performed the first puja on Tuesday night after midnight to initiate the darshan for devotees.

This year, the district administration has diligently worked to ensure a smooth temple celebration, collaborating with the police and endowment departments. District collector Manzir Gilani and superintendent of police Radhika personally inspected the arrangements. The collector announced that Seeghra darshan would prioritize elders, infants, and their mothers. Ambulances and emergency medical services have been strategically placed along the queues from Thursday evening to Friday evening. Watering stations have been set up in twelve locations within and outside the temple, and traffic restrictions have been implemented.

In response to allegations of neglecting devotees last year, the authorities are taking comprehensive measures to address any shortcomings and provide better facilities. Ratha Saptami is the most significant festival observed at the Arasavalli temple, located in Srikakulam Town, Andhra Pradesh, India.

Celebrated in February or March, the festival honors Lord Surya Narayana Swamy and is believed to mark the day of the Sun God’s birth. It symbolizes the transition from darkness to light, marking the end of winter and the beginning of spring. According to mythology, the birthday of the Sun God is believed to bring unique vibrations and rays to the temple grounds each year.
