Congress's reaction to Mamata Banerjee ally India saying '40 seats'.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, leader of the Trinamool Congress, has made it clear that her party will contest all 42 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections independently. In response to Mamata’s assertion, the Congress expressed skepticism, stating that they doubt the Trinamool Congress would secure even 40 seats in the next parliamentary polls.

Despite both being part of the INDIA alliance, Mamata Banerjee emphasized that her primary focus is on combating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh echoed this sentiment, acknowledging that countering the BJP remains their top priority.

Jairam Ramesh suggested unity among opposition parties, stating, “According to me, we should acknowledge that municipal elections are not going on.” However, the rift between the Trinamool Congress and Congress over seat sharing in West Bengal has widened. Mamata Banerjee, in a public gathering in Murshidabad, criticized the Congress, indicating a lack of communication since their disagreement.

Mamata Banerjee challenged the Congress to surpass the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, particularly in Varanasi, the constituency held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Trinamool Congress leader took a firm stance against the Congress, asserting that she offered them two seats but they insisted on more, leading to the decision to contest all 42 seats independently.

The ongoing discord between the Trinamool Congress and Congress within the INDIA alliance raises uncertainties about their collaboration in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the dates of which are yet to be announced. Mamata Banerjee has explicitly stated that her party will not share seats with the Communist Party of India and Congress, both allies in the INDIA coalition.
