Ally NCP Criticizes Shinde’s Approval of Maratha Quota Demands as Mere ‘Eyewash

Chhagan Bhujbal, the leader of the NCP, Shinde’s expressed significant reservations regarding the government’s announcement on the Maratha quota demands. Meanwhile, Manoj Jarange-Patil, a prominent organizer of the Maratha quota demonstrations, extended gratitude to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde for acknowledging and accepting their demands.

Speaking to a gathering of supporters in Navi Mumbai, Jarange-Patil, who has led the movement for over four months, urged the government to promptly issue Kunbi certificates and announced the withdrawal of cases filed against community members during the protests by order of the chief minister.

Highlighting the unity of the Maratha community, Jarange-Patil pledged to keep Marathas and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) distinct. He disclosed plans to convene in the Jalna village of Antarwali Sarathi to determine the next course of action, emphasizing the need for the government’s order to withstand legal scrutiny. He warned of a return to Azad Maidan if any issues arose with the government’s decision.

Congratulations to the protestors! Eknath Shinde

In response to the developments, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde met with Jarange-Patil at the Navi Mumbai protest site and commended the activist for his persistence and dedication to the cause.

Shinde congratulated the protestors for the peaceful conduct of the agitation and asserted his commitment to the welfare of the people, emphasizing that government decisions are driven by public interest rather than political considerations. He indirectly alluded to the lack of support from Maratha leaders, including veteran Sharad Pawar, during critical times.

Notification of requests

A notification released by the Maharashtra government outlined the recognition of all blood family members of Maratha community members as Kunbis, provided their caste records were identified. The notification referred to the draft regulations as the Maharashtra Scheduled Castes,

Scheduled Tribes, De-Notified Tribes, Nomadic Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and Special Backward Category (Regulation of Issuance and Verification of) Caste Certificate (Amendment) Rules, 2024.

Kunbi caste certificates will be granted upon submission of an affidavit proving relationships with blood relatives and “patriarchal” relatives, with certificates issued promptly following field investigation and verification.

The term “sage soyare” includes relatives from multiple generations born out of caste marriages, and the rules ensure that individuals identified as “sage soyare” based on Kunbi records will be granted Kunbi caste certificates.
