Delhi airport suspends flights for more than two hours until Republic Day

The government declared a temporary suspension of flight operations at Delhi Airport, restricting landings from 10:20 am to 12:45 pm until Republic Day. This airspace restriction is also anticipated on 29 January during the beating retreat ceremony at Vijay Chowk. Notably, the airport will undergo a complete shutdown on 26 January, from 6 am to 9 pm, affecting both arrivals and departures.

Flights at Delhi Airport are temporarily disabled. 

It’s important to note that this Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) will not impact the flight operations of the Air Force, Army, Border Security Force, or government-operated aircraft ferrying dignitaries such as the Governor or Chief Minister.

This temporary closure of flights at Delhi Airport is an annual precautionary measure taken ahead of Republic Day celebrations. The 145-minute daily closure over the next week is expected to disrupt commercial schedules, particularly after recent weeks of heavy fog causing numerous flight delays, diversions, and cancellations. A recent incident involving an IndiGo flight captain being assaulted by a disgruntled passenger on a Delhi-Goa flight, delayed by nearly 13 hours, further highlighted the challenges faced by the aviation sector.

The Aviation Minister follows a six-day plan.

To address issues related to fog-induced disruptions, Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia introduced a six-point plan, including special flights for passenger convenience and the establishment of ‘war rooms’. The security measures for Republic Day include a ban on paragliders, flying objects, and adventure activities like para-leaping until 15 February. The list of prohibited items encompasses hang gliders, microlight planes, remotely piloted drones, and hot air balloons.

Delhi Police’s East District conducted a mock anti-terror drill at Akshardham Temple to evaluate their readiness for various crisis scenarios. As part of the security arrangements for the 75th Republic Day celebrations on 26 January 2024, French President Emmanuel Macron will be the chief guest, marking the sixth occasion of a French leader participating in the festivities.
