Senior officers and assistants of Hemant Soren were attacked for illegal mining survey.

Officials quoted by PTI have reported that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids on Wednesday, examining premises linked to several individuals, including the press advisor and others associated with Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. The searches are prompted by their suspected involvement in an illicit mining case.

According to sources, the state’s central agency is conducting raids at approximately twelve sites, following the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The targeted locations include the homes of a police constable, several prison department workers, former MLA Pappu Yadav, Sahibganj district collector and SP Abhishek Prasad alias Pintu, among others.

The Chief Minister of Jharkhand has been repeatedly summoned by the federal probe agency to answer questions related to the matter. Speculations arose in political circles when Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MLA Sarfaraz Ahmad resigned from his position in the Assembly one day after receiving the seventh summons from the ED.

In response to the sixth summons on December 12, Chief Minister Soren communicated to the ED that the CBI had already disclosed all his and his family’s assets during their preliminary probe, initiated following a complaint to the Lokpal. Soren emphasized that he does not belong to any political party in power at the Centre, which he believes is the primary reason for the ED’s interest in interrogating him. He expressed willingness to provide the necessary documents or information to the ED as long as they were not already in his possession.

Fourteen individuals have been detained in connection with the case, including Chhavi Ranjan, a member of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) class of 2011 who previously served as the director of the state’s social welfare department and the deputy commissioner of Ranchi.

The ED’s investigation into alleged money laundering linked to illegal mining in Jharkhand led to the questioning of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chief in November of the previous year. The case, involving “proceeds of crime” amounting to Rs 100 crore from illegal mining operations in 2022, has seen Chief Minister Hemant Soren successfully evading seven summonses issued by the Enforcement Directorate.
