Byculla Women’s Prison opens FM radio center for inmates in Mumbai

A new chapter unfolded this week at Byculla Women’s Jail in Maharashtra as the Chief of the Prison Department, Amitabh Gupta, engaged in a radio interview conducted by inmate Shraddha Chougule. This event marked the inauguration of the “FM Radio Centre” within the prison premises, an initiative aimed not only at entertaining inmates but also fostering their reform through spiritual and devotional programs, along with enhancing their knowledge in radio broadcasting.

The concept of FM radio centers within prison premises is not novel in the state, with existing facilities in places like Nagpur Central Jail, Pune Yerawada Central Jail, Amravati Central Jail, and Kolhapur Central Jail, according to Gupta. However, this marks the first endeavor tailored specifically for women inmates.

Recognizing the inherent uneasiness experienced by anyone entering a prison and the negative thoughts that may plague inmates’ minds, Gupta emphasized the importance of the FM radio center in Byculla Women’s Prison. The center aims to channel positivity by having women inmates work as radio jockeys, delivering devotional songs, bhajans, spiritual programs, and even playing songs on demand.

In addition to contributing to the reformation of women on the other side of the law, the FM radio center offers a unique opportunity for female inmates to be educated as radio jockeys, equipping them with skills for potential employment after their release. During the interview conducted by inmate Chougule, discussions unfolded about the current facilities available to prisoners and future plans to uphold their human rights.
