In response to protests by Members of Parliament (MPs) within the House, Lok Sabha Speaker who displayed placards demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, an unprecedented action was taken during the Winter Session of Parliament. On Day 11, the opposition launched a comprehensive offensive against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), urging a thorough investigation into a security breach and a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah. Turbulent scenes unfolded in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, with opposition chants echoing “BJP jawab do, sadn se bhagna bnd kro.”

Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, suspended thirty opposition MPs, including seasoned Congress member Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, for the duration of the Winter Session in response to the protests. Simultaneously, three MPs were suspended pending review by the Privileges Committee. Earlier, 13 MPs, nine from the Congress, had been suspended for unruly behavior, and this recent action followed that suspension.

The opposition, unified since the previous week, persisted in demanding statements from Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, resulting in repeated adjournments. Prime Minister Modi, in an interview, dismissed the need for a parliamentary debate, emphasizing an investigation into the security breach instead. The Congress accused him of avoiding a debate to shield BJP MP Pratap Simha, linked to the intruders causing disruption in the Lok Sabha.

Despite opposition calls for the reinstatement of the 13 suspended Lok Sabha MPs, a few of them, including Congress MPs Mohammed Jawaid, Hibi Eden, Benny Behanan, Dean Kuriakose, and S Venkatesan of the CPI (M), protested with placards on the Parliament steps. Criticizing the government’s stance, they highlighted the irony of praising the new Parliament building’s security just months ago.

Further suspensions included MPs Dayanidhi Maran of the DMK and T. R. Baalu of the TMC. Lok Sabha Speaker Three MPs, K Jayakumar, Vijay Vasanth, and Abdul Khaleque, were suspended for scaling the Speaker’s podium, with Parliament Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi moving the motion, which passed by voice vote, leading to the adjournment of Lok Sabha’s daily session. The opposition continued to stress the urgency of a statement either from the Prime Minister or the Home Minister on the matter.
