Meta's Instagram and Threads Platform to Cease Political Content Recommendations

Instagram, under the ownership of Meta, has ceased recommending political content to its users, a decision confirmed by Instagram’s CEO, Adam Mosseri. However, users who follow specific political pages will still receive such suggestions.

In a blog post detailing the latest update, it was clarified that these recommendation changes pertain to public accounts and platforms where content is suggested, including Explore, Reels, In-Feed Recommendations, and Suggested Users. However, it was emphasized that the update does not alter how content from accounts users choose to follow is displayed.

Nevertheless, given the political landscape in India, this adjustment instagram.com could potentially impact influencers who have gained prominence for their politically themed content.

If political content—potentially related to things like laws, elections, or social topics—is posted by an account that is not eligible to be recommended, that account’s content can still reach their followers in Feed and Stories.

Moreover, Meta’s recent alteration is aimed at curbing the spread of problematic content that could incite political conflicts on social media platforms. Additionally, the company is also downgrading content related to “vaccine” and “COVID,” further limiting the dissemination of political and hard news topics.

Our goal is to preserve the ability for people to choose to interact with political content while respecting each person’s appetite for it.

Mosseri, the CEO of Instagram, concluded in the blog post.

However, these updates were met with disapproval from users and creators who were actively involved in the content. Nonetheless, on Instagram and in discussions, administrators of suggested professional accounts can utilize the “account status” feature to verify whether their content meets the eligibility criteria to be recommended.
