Kochi Metro On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the 1.16 km stretch between SN Junction and Tripunithura terminal, marking the completion of the first phase of the Kochi Metro.
The long-awaited Tripunithura station’s inauguration is expected to bring additional passengers to the Kochi Metro, potentially pushing the daily average ridership beyond 100,000. This development is particularly beneficial for rail passengers facing delays near Tripunithura railway station due to frequent train traffic, providing them with a convenient interchange option to the Metro.

About Kochi Metro
Kochi Metro, in its initial phase, comprises 25 stations spanning 28.12 kilometers from Aluva to Tripunithura. On the inaugural day, the first train, carrying children with disabilities, departed for Aluva at 10 am.
Commercial operations for the Tripunithura-Aluva route commenced thereafter. While the approved ticket price is Rs 75, it may later be revised to Rs 60 until further notice. The first phase, built at a cost of Rs 7,377 crore, expands the network, connecting Aluva in the northern suburbs to Tripunithura in the southern part of Kochi.

Kochi Metro significantly enhances connectivity, facilitating travel to the eastern and southern regions of Ernakulam district. The newly launched Tripunithura metro terminal, situated near the primary railway station and with an adjacent bus terminal, is poised to become a major multimodal transport hub for the city.
The terminal’s pillars and walls are adorned with artwork depicting ‘athachamayam,’ a ten-day annual cultural fest in Tripunithura. Additionally, the station will house a dance museum dedicated to the traditional dance forms of the state.
Tripunithura Terminal Launches by Kochi Metro Rail Limited
Dignitaries present at the inauguration ceremony included Industries Minister P Rajeeve, Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden, and local MLA K Babu. A video message from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan commended the efforts of Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) during the function.
The construction of Kochi Metro’s first phase began in 2013, with PM Modi inaugurating it in 2017. Subsequently, multiple network stretches were opened in phases.
Initially led by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) under ‘Metroman’ E Sreedharan’s guidance until 2020, the project was later handed over to KMRL. The second phase, connecting JLN Stadium to Infopark, the city’s IT hub, is anticipated to be operational by 2028, further expanding the metro network.
