Historic Moment: Prime Minister Modi Inaugurates India’s First Underwater Metro in Kolkata
2 min readPrime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate India’s first underwater metro route in Kolkata on Wednesday, showcasing the nation’s advancements in infrastructure development.
The new underwater service is part of Metro in Kolkata’s East-West corridor, spanning 16.6 km and crossing the Hooghly River, with three subterranean stations among the six planned.

As part of his 10-day tour across 12 states and union territories, Prime Minister Modi will unveil and lay the foundation stone for projects totaling Rs 15,400 crore in Kolkata.
Among the projects is the official opening of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade segment of the Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor, marking the country’s inaugural venture into submerged metro services.
The East-West Metro in Kolkata stretch, costing Rs 4,965 crore and covering 4.8 kilometers, features Howrah as the location for India’s deepest metro station, situated 30 meters below the surface.
Significant areas like Salt Lake Sector V, the IT hub, will benefit from the corridor, even though passenger services are scheduled to commence later despite the official opening.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will also launch additional train services to enhance urban mobility, including the Taratala-Majerhat Metro section and the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay section.
Other projects to be dedicated include the Agra Metro in Kolkata stretch, the Kochi Metro Rail Phase I Development project, and the Duhai-Modinagar (North) section of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor. The Pune Metro’s route from Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi will also be inaugurated.
In addition to these events, PM Modi is slated to address a public rally later in the day in Barasat, located in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
This visit marks the final leg of Modi’s recent engagements in Bengal, during which he criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government for alleged atrocities in Sandeshkhali.

The Prime Minister urged the public to ensure the TMC’s defeat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Last week, Modi had a diplomatic meeting with Mamata Banerjee at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata, Metro in Kolkatainitiated by the chief minister.
