Initially designed for business travelers seeking solitude and productivity, these lounges have evolved into popular hubs for all, attracting passengers in search of complimentary amenities such as free food, beverages, and comfortable charging stations for electronic devices.

The surge in lounge popularity can be attributed to the rise of social media content featuring affordable or “two-rupee” complimentary meals, creating a widespread interest among passengers, including those who were previously eligible but hesitant to embrace the lounge culture at Indian airports.

Originally, airport lounges were meant to cater to business travelers, providing a quiet environment for work, relaxation, and dining before flights. However, the landscape has shifted with the influx of budget airlines that restrict passengers from enjoying warm meals on board, prompting many to flock to lounges for a more satisfying pre-flight experience.

The shift in lounge accessibility is also linked to credit card companies and banks offering lounge access as a perk to enhance credit card usage. Rather than requiring an upscale credit card or significant spending, many individuals now gain entry through specific cards, which reimburse the lounge a pre-negotiated cost each time a cardholder enters. While admission fees are minimal, lounges aim to profit by encouraging visitors to make additional purchases during their stay.

Credit card issuers like HDFC, SBI, and ICICI, along with card networks like Visa, Mastercard, Diners, and Rupay, contribute to the financial transactions involved in this arrangement. With credit card usage still relatively new in India, offering free lounge access is a strategy to increase card penetration, with the eventual goal of generating revenue through interest charges on late payments or fees for converting payments to EMIs.

However, in recent months, many credit card issuers have devalued their products, implementing caps on lounge visits and minimum spending requirements for access. Despite these changes, free lounge access remains a feature of some credit card products, although the proliferation of credit cards may help alleviate long queues at lounges.

Nevertheless, there is no guarantee of a seamless experience, and the current scene in airport lounges often features a mix of lone travelers engaged in work at food courts, showcasing a shift from a leisure-oriented environment to one that caters to classic business travelers with laptops open and Excel sheets in progress.
