Court rejects CBI petition, 'Indrani Mukerjea' series to be released on Webflix

On Thursday, Indrani Mukerjea the Bombay High Court issued a verdict regarding a web series, rejecting the CBI’s plea for a stay order on its release. The documentary series, focusing on the trial of Indrani Mukerjea for the alleged murder of her daughter Sheena Bora, premiered on the OTT platform Webflix after the court dismissed the CBI’s petition against its streaming.

Story of Indrani Mukerjea Series

Titled ‘The Indrani Mukerjea Story: The Buried Truth,’ the docu-series explores the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Sheena Bora and was originally set to debut on Webflix on February 23. Following the CBI’s concerns about potential impacts on the judicial process, the High Court initially requested the documentary’s release to be halted. However, on Thursday, the court permitted its launch, rejecting the CBI’s plea for a stay until the completion of the trial.

Court rejects the CBI Plea. 

The division bench of Manjusha Deshpande and Revati Mohit, overseeing the case, stated that they found nothing ‘prejudicial’ in the series that could pose significant concerns for the ongoing Sheena Bora murder trial, where Indrani Mukerjea is a key accused. The court dismissed the CBI’s application, emphasizing, “We did not think there’s anything in the series. We initially thought there might be something, and therefore, we also watched the docu-series. Public action is the least of our worries.”

Sheena Bora Murder Case

The Sheena Bora murder case involves allegations that Bora was strangled to death in a car by Indrani Mukerjea, her former driver Shyamvar Rai, and ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna in April 2012. Bora, Indrani’s daughter from a previous relationship, had her body burnt in a forest in the Rajgad district of Maharashtra.

The CBI contended that the documentary could create a public perception that might influence the judicial process. However, the court, having viewed the series themselves, expressed confidence that the CBI would not pursue its objection against the series.

In conclusion, the Bombay High Court has directed Webflix to halt the screening of the web series on Indrani Mukerjea, a key figure in the Sheena Bora murder case. The scheduled release on February 23 has been stopped by the court’s order.
