Farmers' Leader Lambasts AAP Government; SKM Recalls 'Black Friday

Farmers are set to organize a Mahapanchayat at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on March 14 and plan tractor marches on highways starting February 26, as declared by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM). The SKM is expected to express solidarity by watching ‘Black Friday’ today. The protest gained momentum following the tragic death of a young farmer in clashes with security forces at the Punjab-Haryana border.

Rakesh Tikait, the leader of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), announced that SKM will conduct a tractor march towards the nation’s capital. Their demands, including the formation of a board to oversee Shubhkaran Singh’s postmortem, video documentation, filing the case under Section 302 (murder), and declaring martyr status by the Punjab government, were all reportedly approved.

Expressing frustration, the farmer leader highlighted the lack of response from the Punjab government for over 14 hours. The Chief Minister of Punjab offered a government position for the victim’s sister and Rs 1 crore for the family of the deceased.

Despite these developments, the farmers are expected to attend the Mahapanchayat on March 14 without tractors, challenging the government’s stance. Rakesh Tikait questioned the government’s commitment, emphasizing their right to protest peacefully.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha has additionally called for charges against Anil Vij, the state home minister, and Manohar Lal Khattar, the chief minister of Haryana, labeling them responsible for the farmer’s death. The demand for their resignation has been put forth. Meanwhile, the Haryana Police has issued warnings of attaching protesters’ bank accounts and seizing property for any damage caused to public or private assets.

Thousands of farmers remain camped at the Punjab-Haryana borders, demanding legal assurance for the minimum support price (MSP) and forgiveness of farm debt. The tragic incident at the Khanauri border prompted a two-day halt to the ‘Dilli Chalo’ march for a situational assessment.
