On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to unveil five projects with a cumulative worth of Rs. 1,200 crore at the Amul’s Golden jubilee celebrations of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) in Ahmedabad. The GCMMF is the entity behind the renowned “Amul” brand. The event will also encompass the presentation of GCMMF’s 25-year plan, as revealed by Jayen Mehta, the managing director of the federation.

Anticipated to draw more than 1.25 lakh dairy farmers from approximately 18,600 villages in Gujarat, the event will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Jayen Mehta noted that 40 to 45 percent of the attending dairy farmers are expected to be female.
Established in 1973, GCMMF oversees milk producers from 18 district dairy unions, boasting an annual revenue of Rs 61,000 crore, with 36.4 lakh farmers falling under its purview.
The Prime Minister is slated to unveil five new dairy projects during the celebration: a Rs 600 crore investment in a cutting-edge cheese plant by Sabar Dairy, an expanded chocolate plant by Amul’s Golden, a 50,000-liter ice cream plant by Sarhad Dairy in Kutch, and a new Bharuch Dairy Unit in Mumbai.
Despite its non-political nature, the BJP has been in control of GCMMF in recent years, overseeing the majority of the 18 dairy unions that are its members. Notably, Jetha Bharwad, the deputy speaker and chairman of Panchmahal Dairy, and Shankar Chaudhary, the speaker of the Gujarat Assembly, continue to lead direct cooperatives. There have been observations that the BJP has taken a prominent role in the organization, which was once associated with Congress.
During his one-day visit to Gujarat, Amul’s Golden Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate projects totaling Rs 79,517 crore. Among these are several Rs 3,000 crore projects, such as an ice cream factory at Sarhad Dairy in Kutch, a tetra pack milk processing plant in Anand, and a Mumbai Bharuch dairy branch. His itinerary includes traveling from Ahmedabad to Mehsana, where he will participate in the consecration ceremony of the Valinath temple and lay foundation stones for projects valued at Rs 13,000 crore.
