In a widely circulated video, YS Sharmila Reddy, the sister of YSRCP leader and Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, is seen lying on a cot in the Congress office in Vijayawada. She claimed that she stayed there to avoid what she alleged was the government’s attempt to place her under house arrest amidst a political standoff in Andhra Pradesh. Addressing the media at Andhra Ratna Bhavan in Vijayawada on Wednesday, YS Sharmila criticized Jagan Mohan Reddy for not addressing crucial issues affecting youth, the unemployed, and students during his five-year tenure. She alleged attempts of house arrest and questioned the right to protest in a democracy.
On Thursday, Sharmila claimed to be surrounded by thousands of police officers, accusing the government of suppressing democratic rights and supporting the unemployed. MP Manickam Tagore accused Jagan Mohan Reddy of an authoritarian attitude and called for upholding democratic values.
YS Sharmila, who joined Congress on January 4 and quickly became the state chief, had earlier formed the YSR Telangana Party in July 2021 after a reported disagreement with her brother. She accused Jagan Mohan Reddy of neglecting development and highlighted the increasing crimes against Dalits, attributing them to the sand mafia and mining industry.
Sharmila also criticized Jagan for not leading a movement against the Center’s denial of special category status, despite his past protests on the issue. The political tensions in Andhra Pradesh continue to escalate amid allegations of authoritarian behavior and suppression of democratic rights.
