Ashok Chavan: It is impossible to change your views overnight.

In a recent interview, the 65-year-old Ashok Chavan expressed his discontent with the Congress party, stating that it was unprepared for the upcoming elections. A former chief minister of Maharashtra and a lifelong member of the Congress Party until a few days ago, Chavan surprised many by submitting his nomination for the Rajya Sabha with the BJP.

Chavan justified his ideological shift by emphasizing the need to focus on what could be done for the nation rather than sticking to a particular ideology. He mentioned observing the lack of planning for the approaching Lok Sabha election and decided to align himself with the BJP, citing the opportunity to work at the federal level.

Addressing allegations that he resigned under pressure, Ashok Chavan dismissed them as lies and urged the party to reflect on its own shortcomings. He defended himself against accusations related to the Adarsh case, labeling it a political accident. Chavan acknowledged the internal issues within the Congress but refrained from criticizing specific individuals.

Responding to speculation about Congress MLAs joining him, Chavan clarified that he had not sought the presence of any MLAs and had no intention of dividing the party. However, he acknowledged growing dissatisfaction among the party’s MLAs, who expressed concerns about the upcoming assembly elections.

Regarding criticism from Ramesh Chennithala, the All-India Congress Committee’s Maharashtra representative, Chavan suggested that facing a difficult battle without clear resistance from the BJP and limited time was not a wise choice. He emphasized the need for the Congress in Maharashtra to adapt to the changing political landscape.

Ashok Chavan acknowledged the opportunities the Congress provided him over the past 38 years but stressed the effort he put into earning those opportunities. He highlighted his achievements in guiding the party to victory in the 2009 assembly elections and outperforming the NCP in seats during his tenure. Despite his decision to join the BJP, Chavan refrained from discussing national leadership and focused on the need for the Congress in Maharashtra to address its internal challenges.
