Ashok Chavan has filed his candidature for the Rajya Sabha elections.

Ashok Chavan, a prominent political figure in Maharashtra and former Chief Minister associated with the Congress, recently submitted his application for the Rajya Sabha elections after joining the BJP. This move came just days after he severed ties with the Congress and expressed his gratitude to the senior BJP leadership for nominating him as their candidate for the Maharashtra Rajya Sabha.

Nominations for the Rajya Sabha seats in 15 states were due on February 15, with elections scheduled for February 27. Chavan, acknowledging the trust placed in him by the BJP despite his recent switch, described it as a significant responsibility. He thanked key figures in the BJP, including State BJP President Chandrakant Bawankhule, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Having been associated with the Congress for forty years, Ashok Chavan clarified that his decision to join the BJP was driven by the belief in greater possibilities rather than the lure of a Rajya Sabha seat. Despite facing defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he highlighted his track record of winning the Bhokar assembly seat and emphasized his commitment to the BJP’s success in future elections.

Chavan acknowledged the support from Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and expressed gratitude to the Mumbai Congress president, albeit with a light-hearted slip of the tongue that amused BJP supporters present. He promptly corrected the error, emphasizing that he had indeed joined the BJP after 38 years in the Congress.

During his first press event at the BJP office, Ashok Chavan assured his commitment to the party’s success in both state and Lok Sabha elections. He refrained from speaking negatively about his former party and highlighted the positive contributions of Devendra Fadnavis to the development of his constituency and region. Chavan emphasized the importance of focusing on overall state improvement rather than solely concentrating on political rivals, aligning with the cultural values of Maharashtra.
