2 min readOn February 13, the Defense Ministry and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a state-owned company, signed a Rs 2,269-crore agreement for the procurement of 11 Shakti Electronic Warfare Systems and associated equipment for the Indian Navy. The Shakti EW System will be installed on the Indian Navy’s capital warships, enhancing their electronic defense capabilities.

EW System Shakti
The contract, executed under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category, encompasses the acquisition of 11 Shakti Electronic Warfare Systems, and BEL, based in Hyderabad, is tasked with fulfilling this order. The initiative involves collaboration with over 155 industry partners, including MSMEs, and is expected to generate 2.5 lakh man-days of employment over four years, aligning with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision.

Manufactured entirely in India, the Shakti EW System excels in navigating densely electromagnetic environments, accurately intercepting electronic emissions, and deploying countermeasures. This system replaces the Indian Navy’s previous generation of EW systems, offering a crucial electronic defense layer against both conventional and modern radars, as well as anti-ship missiles.
Equipped with wideband Electronic Support Measures (ESM) and Electronic Counter Measures (ECM), the Shakti EW System safeguards Indian Navy ships against missile attacks. Defense Ministr Its ESM capabilities aid in precisely determining the direction and eavesdropping on contemporary radars. Additionally, the system includes radar fingerprinting and recording replay facilities for post-mission analysis.
Performance sharing by Bharat Electronics
In a recent development, Bharat Electronics Limited received additional orders amounting to Rs 114.59 crore, in addition to the ongoing order from the Indian Navy. These orders pertain to the supply of Software Defined Radios (SDRs), High Definition Very Low Frequency (HD VLF) receivers, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), among other items. As of now, BEL has received orders totaling Rs 30,776.06 crore in the current fiscal year.
Regarding performance, BEL’s stock has shown significant growth, increasing by 86.42% in the past year and 298.89% in the last six months. This contrasts with the Nifty 50 benchmark, which has seen an 11.48% increase in the last six months and a 20.84% increase in the last year.
