Four people were killed and more than 100 injured in gang violence in Haldwani.

Tension gripped Haldwani on Thursday night as riots broke out in response to the demolition of an illegally constructed madrasa. The destruction of the madrasa sparked violence in the Banbhoolpura area, leading to unrest in the Haldwani community in the Nainital district. District officials reported that a curfew has been enforced in Banbhoolpura, with a shoot-at-sight order issued for rioters. The violence has resulted in three to four deaths and over 100 injuries, mainly among police officers.

To maintain law and order, the district magistrate, Vandana, announced a curfew in Haldwani, accompanied by a city-wide block on internet access. Local schools have also been directed to remain closed. The situation remains tense, with ongoing efforts to restore calm.

In response to the madrasa demolition, residents of Haldwani allegedly set cars on fire and engaged in stone-throwing, causing harm to at least 100 individuals and prompting the imposition of a curfew. Most of the hospitalized individuals in Banbhoolpura were reported to be police officers and municipal workers involved in the demolition.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Prahlad Meena, revealed that the madrasa had received prior notice due to its illegal construction on public property. Reports of violence outside the Banbhoolpura police station are being investigated, with authorities determining whether the weapons used were legal or illicit. The police responded by firing shots into the air, resulting in three to four casualties.

According to Vandana, rioters attempted to set fire to the Banbhoolpura police station, but were restrained by the police. The violence later spread to Gandhi Nagar, near Banbhoolpura. Vandana mentioned a possible premeditated and unprovoked nature of the violence, with allegations of stones and even petrol bombs being prepared in advance.

Vandana assured that the situation is now under control in Banbhoolpura, preventing the escalation of violence into the main city. Paramilitary forces are en route and stationed in the region, while additional police officers from nearby districts have been deployed within the city to maintain law and order.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami called senior officials, including SSP Meena, SDM Paritosh Verma, city magistrate Richa Singh, and municipal commissioner Pankaj Upadhyay, to a meeting in the capital city Dehradun. The meeting aims to address the situation and plan further actions in response to the recent events in Haldwani.
