India has advised Myanmar nationals to leave Rakhine State.

In response to the escalating security situation, India issued a travel advisory on Tuesday, cautioning its citizens against visiting Rakhine State in Myanmar. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released its first advisory, citing the heightened violence, telecommunications network outage, and scarcity of essential supplies as the reasons for the warning.

Indian citizens were strongly urged to avoid traveling to Rakhine State due to the rapidly deteriorating security conditions, disrupted telecommunications, and severe shortages, according to the statement.

The unrest in Myanmar stems from the military coup on February 1, 2021, leading to widespread protests demanding the restoration of democracy. Since October of the previous year, intense clashes have occurred between armed ethnic groups and the Myanmarese military in Rakhine State and other regions.

The hostilities have intensified since November, with heightened concerns in New Delhi about potential security implications for Manipur and Mizoram, given the proximity to the Indian border. Myanmar shares a border of over 1,640 kilometers with several northeastern Indian states, including the volatile Nagaland and Manipur.

In an effort to address the security challenges, India issued an advisory on Tuesday, urging its citizens to refrain from traveling to Myanmar and specifically advising those in the unrest-prone Rakhine state, which borders Manipur and Mizoram, to leave immediately.

The Ministry of External Affairs also announced plans to construct a barrier along the entire international border with Myanmar. This move was accompanied by advice for Indian nationals to vacate the troubled state.

The decision to potentially terminate the Free Movement Regime (FMR), allowing visa-free and passport-free entry for tribes on both sides of the border, has faced opposition from Mizoram and Nagaland. Both states, with interrelated tribes residing on either side of the border, oppose the termination of the FMR.

Despite the ongoing struggle between pro-democracy insurgents and the Myanmar Junta across the border, the Indian government is considering erecting at least a minimal physical barrier along the border to address the concerns of its citizens residing in proximity to the region.
