Zakir Hussain and Shankar Mahadevan receive awards at Grammy Awards.

The 66th Annual Grammy Awards took place in Los Angeles, where the fusion band “Shakti” secured the prestigious award for Best Global Music Album on Monday. The winning album, titled “This Moment,” featured prominent Indian musicians Shankar Mahadevan and Zakir Hussain. The Grammys shared a photo on their official X account, formerly known as Twitter, capturing the moment when Mahadevan and band member Ganesh Rajagopalan accepted the award on stage.

Expressing gratitude in his acceptance speech, Mahadevan thanked God, family, friends, and his homeland, India. He dedicated the award to his wife, acknowledging her significant role in his musical journey, drawing cheers from the enthusiastic audience.

The acclaimed album “This Moment,” released on June 30 of the previous year, showcases eight songs by the talented ensemble, including John McLaughlin (guitar synth), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Shankar Mahadevan (vocalist), V Selvaganesh (percussionist), and Ganesh Rajagopalan (violinist). Other notable artists like Susana Baca, Bokante, Burna Boy, and Davido also received Grammy nominations.

In another highlight, Zakir Hussain, Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and virtuoso flute player Rakesh Chaurasia won the Grammy for Best Global Music Efficiency for their contributions to Pashto. Chaurasia received two Grammys, while Hussain secured three in a single evening.

The Grammy Awards showcased a significant recognition of female musicians, with an unprecedented female presence in the top categories. Jon Batiste stood as the sole male artist nominated for record, album, or song of the year. Record of the Year featured hits like “Kill Bill” by SZA, “Anti-Hero” by Taylor Swift, and “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish from Barbie.

In the Best New Artist category, competitors included rapper Ice Spice, country music performer Jelly Roll, pop and R&B vocalist Victoria Monet, singer-songwriter Coco Jones, and folk-pop artist Noah Kahan.a
