On Saturday, Yashasvi Jaiswal etched his name in Indian cricket history by achieving a stunning double century during the second Test match against England at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Vishakhapatnam. This remarkable feat makes Jaiswal the first Indian to accomplish a double century in Test cricket since November 2019, following in the footsteps of Mayank Agarwal.

Known for his aggressive style of play, the youthful opener demonstrated extraordinary poise as he reached his double century off 277 balls, navigating through frequent wicket losses at the other end. At just 22 years old, Jaiswal became the third-youngest Indian to achieve this milestone, following the likes of Sunil Gavaskar and Vinod Kambli.

Notably, he is also the first left-handed batsman to score a Test double century since Gautam Gambhir in 2008. Jaiswal now joins an exclusive group of Indian left-handers, including Gambhir, Kambli (twice), and former captain Sourav Ganguli (once), who have reached the 200-run mark in Test cricket.

Throughout his innings, Jaiswal showcased versatility by effortlessly alternating between ground strokes and airborne shots. His innings featured elegant drives and lofted shots, particularly against spinners, exemplifying his ability to dominate the bowling attack. Even against the challenging pace of James Anderson, Jaiswal remained composed and demonstrated intent by rotating the strike.

Reflecting on his achievement, Jaiswal emphasized the importance of faith in his methods and discipline in the face of changing pitch conditions. He credited the constant encouragement from cricket legends Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma, who urged him to convert his centuries into significant innings.

In the previous Test, Jaiswal faced a setback after a fast start in the first innings, but he bounced back emphatically in the second Test, leading India’s charge on the opening day. Finishing unbeaten at 179 runs from 257 deliveries, he played a pivotal role in India securing a commanding position at 336 for six.

As he surpassed the 200-run mark, Jaiswal broke free from the shackles, smashing a boundary and a six to reach the milestone. This impressive performance marked his second double century and an equal number of half-centuries in just his tenth Test innings.

The Vizag crowd and his colleagues lauded Jaiswal’s exceptional innings, recognizing his talent and potential as a dynamic left-handed batsman in Indian cricket.
