Governor of Kerala and SFI Activist Clash Again: Arif Mohammed Leads Protest

Arif Mohammed Khan disembarked from his vehicle, swiftly procured a chair from a local business along the bustling MC road in Nilamel, and took a seat, vociferously calling for the suppression of SFI demonstrators.

The Governor of Kerala, Arif Mohammed Khan, orchestrated a demonstration on Saturday at a roadside establishment, vehemently demanding the arrest of activists from the Student Federation of India (SFI) due to their anti-Kollam district protest in Nilamel.

Making a striking scene in Nilamel, approximately 40 kilometers from Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital, Khan remained stationed there for over two hours before departing. His departure only occurred after the police presented a copy of the FIR filed against seventeen SFI activists under non-bailable sections of the law.

Subsequently, during an interaction with reporters, the governor launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Vijayan, accusing the veteran Marxist leader of fomenting lawlessness in the state. Khan further alleged that Vijayan had instructed the police to shield these alleged criminals, including the state president of SFI, who faces several pending criminal cases in court.

In a dramatic sequence captured by TV channels, a visibly incensed Khan engaged in a heated argument with police officers. A significant gathering, comprising police personnel, Khan’s representatives, and local residents, converged at the tumultuous scene.

Meanwhile, as the governor was en route to the neighboring town of Kottarakkara for an event, activists from the ruling CPI(M)’s student wing, SFI, organized a black flag protest against him.

The Kerala governor and the Left government have been embroiled in a series of disputes, notably concerning the administration of state universities and Khan’s reluctance to endorse certain bills passed by the assembly. Amidst the escalating confrontation, Khan curtailed his customary policy speech to the Kerala assembly on Thursday, delivering only the final paragraph in under two minutes.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, along with members of his cabinet and LDF MLAs, conspicuously abstained from attending the ‘at home’ function held at Raj Bhavan on Friday. Although invited to the event scheduled from 6:30-7:30 p.m., none of them were present.

Representing the Kerala government, KR Jyothilal, the additional chief secretary for the geraniol management department, took part in the function. Despite being seated next to each other, Khan and Vijayan noticeably ignored each other during the Republic Day Celebration at the Central Arena in the state capital.
