Mamata Banerjee: No cooperation with Congress.

In a strong statement on Wednesday, Mamata Banerjee declared that the Trinamool Congress will contest independently for all 42 Lok Sabha seats in Bengal. She emphasized that considerations for a pan-Indian alliance with the Congress would only be entertained after the election results. This stance appears to dash hopes of a compromise between the two significant opposition parties in India.

Ms. Banerjee criticized Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and his “Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,” slated to reach Bengal. She expressed her displeasure at not being informed about their visit to her state, emphasizing the lack of communication and claiming that Bengali has no connection with her. Despite her amicable relations with Congress matriarch Sonia Gandhi, her rapport with Rahul Gandhi is perceived as strained. She has previously opposed the idea of Congress contesting elections in Bengal under the alliance.

Stating that only Trinamool in Bengal can teach the BJP a lesson, Ms. Banerjee asserted her party’s capability to demonstrate victory to the nation. Jairam Ramesh, the Congress’s chief of communications, responded later, expressing an inability to imagine the INDIA bloc without Mamataji. He emphasized that all INDIA allies would contest the Bengal Lok Sabha elections together.

Amit Malviya from the BJP characterized Mamata Banerjee’s announcement as a sign of desperation, suggesting that she is attempting to secure every seat to remain relevant post-election. The ongoing dispute between the Congress and Trinamool regarding seat-sharing and the potential challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP by the INDIA bloc has persisted for weeks without resolution. The Congress has yet to respond to the deadline for an agreement.

Ms. Banerjee had offered two Lok Sabha seats on Tuesday, criticizing the Congress’s demand for 10-12 seats in Bengal, citing its poor track record in the state. A senior Trinamool leader revealed that Ms. Banerjee was advised not to consider seat-sharing with Congress, as they had demanded a significantly higher number of seats despite her offering two.
