In a letter directed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Rahul Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress party, has urgently sought Shah’s intervention to ensure the safety of Rahul Gandhi and other participants in the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.
This plea comes on the heels of a clash between Congress members, led by Gandhi, and the Assam police on the outskirts of Guwahati. The Assam Police had previously filed an FIR implicating Gandhi and other Congress members in various charges, including criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, and breach of peace, following what Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma termed as “naxalite tactics” inconsistent with Assamese culture.

In his communication with the Home Minister, Kharge pointed out instances where the Assam Police allegedly failed to provide adequate security for Rahul Gandhi, who holds a Z+ protectee status. Kharge highlighted an incident on January 21, where members of another political party assaulted the state party head, damaged Congress party posters, and obstructed the yatra. Kharge expressed concern that the police either stood by or allowed BJP members to approach Gandhi’s vehicle, compromising his security and that of his team.
While evidence of these incidents is in the public domain, Kharge noted that no arrests had been made. He emphasized the need for immediate action to prevent any further harm to Rahul Gandhi or others participating in the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.
Congress leaders have accused Chief Minister Sarma of interference in the yatra. In a recent incident, police in Guwahati blocked Congress workers from using city roadways, leading to a confrontation at the municipal limits. The authorities had earlier denied permission for the yatra to use major roadways, citing congestion concerns. Clashes erupted when Congress staff attempted to breach barricades, contesting the grounds for denial.
Jairam Ramesh, the national secretary of the Congress party, informed the Union Home Minister about the security issues faced by Rahul Gandhi and the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam in a letter sent by Kharge. Kharge reiterated the need for adequate protection for Rahul Gandhi, who is under Z+ security, citing the recent attack on the state president of the Congress and the defacement of Congress posters statewide.
