At the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Mayor Eric Adams highlighted the significance of the event for Hindus in New York City, including those from diverse backgrounds such as South Asian and Indo-Caribbean communities. Mayor Adams expressed that the opening of the Ram Mandir provides a source of joy and spiritual advancement for the city’s largest Indian population, fostering a sense of celebration and reflection on spirituality for collective healing.

Responding to inquiries about the occasion, Adams emphasized the importance of the Ram Mandir for the Hindu community in New York City. He acknowledged the opportunity it offers for spiritual elevation and celebration among the diverse Hindu population.
Mayor Adams further demonstrated his support for the Hindu community by attending a religious event called Mata ki Chowki at the city’s Geeta Mandir, accompanied by Deputy Commissioner of International Affairs Dilip Chauhan, a close ally. Adams had previously declared Diwali as a public school holiday, a move that was approved by state legislators in 2021 and again in 2022, following more than two decades of efforts by supporters, especially the Indian American Community of New York.
Expressing gratitude for the Diwali holiday declaration, Dilip Chauhan praised Mayor Adams for his support of the Hindu community, noting that Adams is the first in history to declare Diwali a public holiday. The movement for Diwali’s official recognition aligns with the growth of the South Asian population in both the nation and New York City.
Over the past three decades, the Asian Indian population in New York City, as classified by the Census Bureau, has more than doubled from 94,000 in 1990 to approximately 213,000 in the 2021 American Community Survey.
Drawing on his experience as a former police captain and as a black man who faced police brutality in his youth, Adams secured victory in the 2021 mayoral election by pledging to enhance public safety and amplify the voices of working-class citizens.

In his remarks to the community, Mayor Adams openly acknowledged the support of the Hindu community, attributing his success to his faith, the faith of the Hindu community, and the blessings of Swami Satyanand, a temple priest at the Geeta Temple in New York. He expressed a belief in the effectiveness of prayer and emphasized that demonstrating faith enables individuals to overcome barriers, including the challenges associated with holding the office of mayor.
