The three deputy ministers, Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna, and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid from the youth ministry, were reportedly suspended due to their official positions. Official sources from New Delhi revealed that the Indian High Commission in Male addressed the issue directly with the Maldivian foreign ministry on Sunday.
The derogatory comments made by the Maldivian ministers have stirred controversy in India, leading to influential figures encouraging social media users to consider their own country as a travel destination rather than visiting the Maldives. Allegedly, there have been indications on social media that some Indians are reconsidering their vacation plans to the Maldives due to the ongoing controversy.
In response to the situation, the Maldivian foreign ministry released a statement on Sunday, acknowledging the existence of disparaging comments about foreign leaders on social media. However, they emphasized that these remarks represent personal opinions and do not reflect the official stance of the Maldivian government.
After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, three junior officials from Mohamed Muizzu’s government made critical comments about him. The Maldives envoy to India, Ibrahim Shaheeb, was called to the Ministry of External Affairs, and the incident was condemned for the unsavory conduct of the suspended junior ministers. While Shaheeb faced scrutiny at the MEA, the Indian High Commissioner to Male conveyed to the Maldives Foreign Minister that such remarks were entirely inappropriate and unacceptable for India.

India has made it clear that it expects more than just a reprimand for the junior ministers’ misconduct, despite the suspension imposed by Mohammed Muizzu. The controversy erupted just before Muizzu’s scheduled five-day state visit to China, riding on the “India Out” campaign that promised to withdraw Indian troops stationed in the archipelago for relief and rescue efforts, a key factor contributing to Muizzu’s election victory the previous year.
