2 min readThe ICC released the schedule for the 2024 T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies, scheduled from June 1 to June 29. As the BCCI’s selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, grapples with choosing the team for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, the most pressing uncertainty for India’s preparation is the captaincy for the 2024 T20 World Cup in June.

While the head selector is expected to address this long-standing issue, it is unlikely to be resolved with the Afghanistan series squad. Meanwhile, fervent supporters of the Indian cricket team created a buzz on social media with a specific poster about the T20 World Cup. The schedule revealed that India would open their campaign on June 5 in New York against Ireland before facing Pakistan at the same location, a highly anticipated match. Canada and the USA, India’s hosts, are in the same group.
Atar Sports, the official broadcaster, unveiled a poster featuring the India-Pakistan match, with Hardik representing India and Shaheed Afridi as Pakistan’s captain. This caused confusion on social media regarding the final details of the announcement and whether Rohit Sharma has been replaced by Hardik as the T20I captain.
Rohit Sharma, the seasoned opener, has not played in a T20I since November 2022 when India lost to England in the semifinals of the T20I series in Australia. Both Rohit and Virat Kohli decided to focus on their game, missing the matches in South Africa and the home series against Australia. Suryakumar Yadav captained the T20 World Cup in June, with uncertainty surrounding his selection for the Afghanistan series.
