A Qatari court commuted the death sentences of eight ex-Indian Navy officers to jail terms.

In a recent development reported by the Ministry of External Affairs, a court in Qatar has revised the sentences of eight former Navy officers involved in the Dahra Global case. Instead of facing imprisonment, the Indian government has pledged to maintain comprehensive consular and legal support for its citizens, continuing to engage with Qatari authorities on the matter.

The Court of Appeal in Qatar issued its decision on the sentencing reduction in the Dahra Global Case, prompting anticipation of a detailed ruling. Family members, accompanied by the Indian ambassador to Qatar and other officials, were present in the Court of Appeal.

Throughout the course of the situation, the Indian government has consistently provided support to the affected individuals and vows to continue offering all possible legal and consular assistance. They are committed to raising the issue with relevant authorities.

The controversy surrounding the Dahra Global case dates back to August 2022 when eight former Navy officers employed by Dahra Global, based in Doha, were arrested. The charges against these Indian citizens were initially undisclosed by Qatari authorities, leading to speculations that they were involved in espionage for Israel. The charge sheet is expected in March 2023, and in response to the situation, India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressed shock and initiated diplomatic discussions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the matter during the COP28 summit in Dubai, where he met with the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani. The discussion focused on the welfare of the Indian community, with India emphasizing efforts to secure the release of the detained individuals. Arindam Bagchi, spokesperson for the MEA, reiterated India’s commitment to bringing back the Navy officers swiftly, emphasizing the government’s keen attention to this critical issue.

The detained individuals, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, and Sailor Rajesh, have been in custody since August of the previous year.

Initially sentenced to death, the Indian government expressed shock at the severity of the sentence and affirmed its dedication to exploring all legal avenues to secure the release of its citizens. These individuals were associated with AlDahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services, a private company providing training and services to Qatar’s security apparatus.
