2 min readThe Winter Carnival in Shimla was inaugurated on Monday at the iconic Ridge by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. The Chief Minister’s office revealed that the event commenced with a cultural parade, featuring 450 women presenting Mahanati, showcasing the talents of Anganwadi workers and self-help groups. Emphasizing the historic significance of Shimla’s Winter Carnival, which extends until January 5 of the following year, the Chief Minister aimed to boost travel in the state.
Addressing the crowd, the Chief Minister acknowledged the challenges faced by Himachal Pradesh’s tourism industry due to recent monsoon disruptions. However, he expressed gratitude for the efforts of his cabinet colleagues and various departments in overcoming these setbacks. Notably, he highlighted the positive trend of thirty thousand tourist cars entering Himachal Pradesh in recent days, indicating a promising revival of the tourism sector.

Underlining the vital role of tourism revenue in the state’s economy, the Chief Minister thanked public officials and representatives for their dedicated contributions. He affirmed the government’s commitment to promoting tourism in the region, citing a substantial budget allocation of Rs 3,000 crores—an impressive increase from the previous Rs 50 crores.
The Chief Minister extended appreciation to children, individuals from all walks of life, and tourists for their significant contributions to the state’s recovery efforts. In a bid to facilitate visitors, he announced the state government’s decision to allow eateries, dhabas, and food stores to remain open 24 hours a day from December 20 to January 5, 2024.
At the Ridge exhibition, organized by the District Administration Shimla and other departments, the Chief Minister inaugurated stalls showcasing various aspects of the region. MLA Harish Janaratha commended the state government’s efforts in organizing the Shimla Winter Carnival, recognizing its potential to increase tourist numbers in Himachal Pradesh.
Shimla Mayor Surender Chauhan greeted the Chief Minister, emphasizing that the carnival symbolizes the government’s commitment to “Vyavstha Parivartan” (Systematic Change). Cultural performances, including Singtu and Kulluvi Nati from the Sirmaur district, were featured during the event.

The Winter Carnival, scheduled until January 5, aims to celebrate Himachal Pradesh’s rich cultural legacy by offering local cuisine, live shows, and cultural events. Dignitaries such as Anirudh Singh, the Minister of Rural Affairs, Prachayati Raj, Vikrmaditya Singh, the Minister of Government Affairs, Vice Chairman Himuda Yashwant Chhajt, Vice Chairman Kehar Singh Khachi of the Himachal Pradesh Forest Development Corporation, and Principal Advisor Naresh Chauhan also attended the event.
