India records 752 new COVID-19 infections, double the number from the previous day

India has reported a concerning surge in COVID-19 cases, recording 752 new infections in the last 24 hours, marking the highest increase in seven months. This figure is more than double the cases reported yesterday. The active cases in the country now stand at 3,420, representing an increase of 423 cases from the previous day, according to the latest Health Ministry reports.

The spike in cases is attributed to the emergence of a new sub-variant, JN.1, which is causing alarm among authorities and health experts. This variant, a sub-lineage of the Omicron version (BA.2.86), has been designated a ‘Variant of Concern’

by the World Health Organization (WHO) due to its rapid growth in incidence in recent weeks. While the WHO assesses the global public health risk posed by JN.1 as low, concerns persist, especially with the onset of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, which may exacerbate respiratory infections.

In addition to the increase in cases, four deaths were reported during this period, compared to one reported yesterday. The southern state, the first to report a case of the JN.1 variant, saw 265 infections and one death in the past 24 hours. However, there has been no clustering of cases reported so far, and all cases of the JN.1 subvariant have shown moderate symptoms.

Kerala, which has been a primary center for COVID-19 cases in recent days, reported 565 new cases, contributing to the overall surge. The total active cases in the country now stand at 2,872. The situation is further compounded by the presence of 21 cases in Goa and one case in Kerala related to the JN.1 variant, according to recent reports.

Rise in Corona Cases

The global concern over the rise in COVID-19 cases is reflected in the World Health Organization’s statement, noting a 52% increase in new cases worldwide in the last four weeks. While the number of new deaths decreased by 8% during the same period, the WHO highlights the growing burden of respiratory infections globally, with over 118,000 new COVID-19 hospitalizations and more than 1600 new intensive care unit (ICU) admissions recorded.
